SEA.AI and Collision Avoidance: Making the Seas Safer

SEA.AI and Collision Avoidance: Making the Seas Safer marine electric systems

Keep reading to learn more about how SEA.AI’s anti-collision system can keep you safe at sea.

No longer confined to tech labs, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly valuable to the boating world. AI helps sailors and boaters make smarter decisions, stay safer, and enjoy their time on the water with greater confidence. These technologies aren’t just for large ships or commercial fleets. They are becoming more accessible to everyday boating enthusiasts.

SEA.AI has pioneered the first AI-driven anti-collision camera system. It can alert navigators and officers on the bridge to everything else floating on the water that these other systems have not identified. Keep reading to learn more about how SEA.AI’s anti-collision system can keep you safe at sea.

The Importance of Collision Avoidance Systems

AI-powered collision avoidance systems transform how boaters stay safe at sea. These programs combine radar, cameras, and sensors to identify nearby vessels or marine life that could pose a risk. What makes this technology so innovative is its use of autonomous navigation controls, including proportional-integral-derivative control, to guide ships efficiently toward their designated waypoints.

Instead of relying solely on human judgment, sailors can utilize AI to assess their surroundings, alert the crew to danger, or adjust the boat’s course to prevent accidents. This technology benefits seasoned sailors who require extra support in challenging conditions, and it provides beginners with a reliable safety net as they build confidence on the water.

SEA.AI Collision Avoidance

SEA.AI can identify targets and automatically determine what constitutes a potential collision threat and what doesn’t, once potential collisions have been identified. The AI will automatically alert the crew.

The system uses an external unit, typically mounted at the highest point on the ship. This unit is equipped with two high-resolution daylight cameras that can operate in the lowest light and contrast conditions. Additionally, it features two thermal cameras, which enable SEA.AI to operate effectively at night. The cameras are both gyro- and digitally stabilized to provide a constant 360° view around the vessel.

With its cameras suitably mounted, SEA.AI’s Sentry will identify larger vessels not equipped with AIS up to a range of 7.5km; smaller craft, such as local fishing boats, dinghies, and inflatables, up to 3km; and buoys and potentially hazardous objects up to 700m away. The thermal cameras make the SEA.AI Sentry an invaluable tool in man overboard search and rescue situations.
