All About Egis Marine Battery Switches marine electric systems

Keep reading to learn more about Egis’ battery switches.

A marine battery switch is an essential component for every boat. It disconnects your engine and all your standard loads from your boat’s batteries and prevents battery drains while in storage. Egis XD modules combine the functions of battery switches and ACRs into a single compact, durable module and offer remote switching capabilities. Keep reading to learn more about Egis’ battery switches.

What Does a Marine Battery Switch Do?

A battery switch gives you complete control over which bank is used or charged. Some marine battery switches disconnect your batteries from the rest of the electrical system, which can prevent your batteries from draining via small power sources like your radio, refrigerator, etc. For other battery switches, you select which battery you can use at a time. You can either switch it to the start battery or your house batteries. These battery selector switches can also disconnect the battery power, so they’re multi-purpose switches.

How Automatic Relays Work

Voltage sensing relays, also known as ACRs ( automatic charging relays), automate the job of switching between 1, 2, and BOTH.

When your engine is running and the alternator is putting out current, the ACR senses the charging voltage and automatically connects the house and starting batteries so that both charge. When the engine is off and a load is present, the ACR automatically isolates the batteries from each other, protecting the starting battery.

What Makes Egis Battery Switches Different

Typically, ACRs are combined with one or more manual battery switches, depending on the number of engines and battery banks. That requires a fair amount of available space for mounting. The cables connecting the switch and relay also add cost and potential failure points. You still have to turn the switch manually at least once a day, which can be a pain if it isn’t easily accessible.

Egis XD modules combine the functions of battery switches and ACRs into a single compact, durable module and offer remote switching capabilities. This means a rocker switch or push button on your dash can do the same thing as a manual switch.

Egis XD Series Function

Egis switches can be configured for a variety of functions. Once you understand the basic structure, the system will make sense.

First, XD relays are available in single, dual, and triple configurations. The dual and triple devices are simply two or three individual relays in the same module. If your configuration requires more than three relays, you can combine modules to create the necessary system. Each individual relay is composed of a switch connecting two terminals.

Second, the installer can configure each relay to function as either a simple ON-OFF battery switch or an ACR that opens or closes based on voltage to isolate batteries when a load is present and combine them when a charge is present.
