4 Common Electrical Issues to Look Out for

4 common electrical issues to look out for

Let’s take a look at some of the most common electrical problems that could indicate more significant issues

Now that the warm weather is here, it is the perfect time to get out on the water and enjoy your boat. The last thing you want is an electrical issue delaying your vacation. There are some preventative measures you can take to ensure your vessel’s electrical system is running correctly. Let’s take a look at some of the most common electrical problems that could indicate more significant issues.

Corroded Wires

Many people splurge on high-quality electrical wires for their boats, but the connectors to those wires are just as important and often overlooked. A corroded wire can lead to a whole host of issues down the road. Open terminals allow corrosion between the connector and wire jacket, eroding the strands and causing problems that do not look like much at first. Ensure your wires are not exposed to heat above 105°C, as high temperatures can increase the risk of corrosion.

Avoid Running Fuses Continuously at Full Ratings

If your fuses are running at their maximum rated value for an extended time, they will begin to produce an excessive amount of heat.  As the fuse starts to produce more heat, it will cause insulation and fuse blocks to melt. In the best-case scenario, this would cause a failure of one or several fuses and pieces of equipment, and the worst-case scenario would, unfortunately, be an onboard fire.

Batteries Draining Too Quickly

If you notice your battery draining when away from your boat, that could indicate that something is connected directly to the battery. Be sure to check the positive terminals on each battery and the battery side of the main switch. The only things that should be connected directly to the battery are safety items. For example, bilge pumps, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors are all important safety items for your boat.

Not Using The Shore Power Cord Locking Ring

When your boat is safely at the dock, you must properly secure the connection between your shore power and hull. The shore power cord locking ring maintains a solid connection between the power cord plug and the hull receptacle. When this connection is not secure, any kind of movement can cause the plug to shift back and forth in the receptacle, compromising the electrical connection and resulting in dangerous heating.
